This month we have the pleasure of chatting with Tom Pullinger our Healthcare & Protection Manager, who was recently team captain of Premier Choice FC in the Bupa Intermediary World Cup 5 a side football Tournament in Manchester. Tom talks about his time in the industry, what expertise he anticipates people needing as they plan for the future and where he sees the industry going as a result of recent trends…

Hi Tom, tell us a little bit about yourself, your life and how you got into industry?

I am 35 years old and originally from Melbourne, Australia. I’m married with 2 children (& 2 dogs!) I started my career in the industry in 2005 after moving from London to Sheffield, where I secured a role as Sales Consultant at Norwich Union Healthcare advising brokers on Private Medical Insurance & Group Income Protection. In 2007 I joined Premier Choice Healthcare as a Healthcare & Protection Account Manager, advising clients nationwide.

What are your specialties/areas of expertise?

I have a wealth of experience in all areas of the Healthcare & Protection market, with my main specialties being Group Private Medical Insurance & Group Risk.

Who can benefit the most from your expertise?

I feel that there are many companies out there who would benefit from my expertise, especially as I can advise on many aspects of Employee Benefits. I’m passionate about the industry when talking to Finance Directors and HR personnel.

Give us the 3 most important tips for people looking for advice and guidance right now?

  1. Communication of benefits – I have seen plenty of companies who do not communicate their employee benefits effectively to their employees. This is where I can assist by providing benefit announcement letters. This will ensure that employees are aware of the benefits that their employer provides.
  2. Seek independent advice – Ensure that you speak with an Independent Adviser such as Premier Choice Healthcare. This will ensure that you have the best policy for your needs, that is within your allocated budget.
  3. If in doubt, ask your adviser – As an independent adviser, we are here to assist our clients in any matter they have. Whether this is regarding Terms & Conditions of the policy or an administration or claims issue, we provide unbiased  advice to put our clients mind at ease.

Great insights Tom, so what is the key trend you see affecting clients over the next 12 months?

The rising cost of Private Medical Insurance is a concern that the industry has faced for many years and will continue to do so. Especially with the major advancement in technology and the ageing workforce.

…and what do you think the health insurance industry will look like in 10 years time?

I can see the advances in technology helping all sectors of the healthcare market, this includes obtaining group quotes online, online medical underwriting. I can also see GP’s and medical practitioners using video conferencing tools to enable patients to see their GP or specialist without actually having to visit. I would also hope that in 10 years the UK government has scrapped P11d on employer funded health insurance products!!
